The World Health Organisation developed a policy framework for active healthy communities. In terms of program implementation, the following elements were identified as necessary for success:
- consultation and needs assessment
- written plan and objectives
- surveillance of active health lifestyle patterns, policy, public opinion and environments
- stable base of support
- clear program identity and message
- coalitions, partnerships, leaders and champions and intersectoral action
- multiple intervention strategies, sites, populations at all levels
- integration of active healthy lifestyle efforts with overall non-communicable disease prevention and with the policies of related sectors
- focus on active healthy lifestyle providing enjoyment and social interaction
- evaluation throughout the process.
