Springfield Masterplanned Community recently won the World’s Best Masterplanned Community at the FIABCI Prix D’Excellent Awards. Springfield is a greenfield development by Springfield Land Corporation and located between Brisbane and Ipswich. It is a masterplanned, self-contained community so the needs of residents are fulfilled within the community.
Key features of the Springfield Masterplanned Community include:
- A master plan to deliver and provide direction
- Mixed-use community containing low-, medium- and high-density residential, including affordable housing (proposed 100,000+ residents); employment (proposed 30,000 jobs); education city (with facilities for primary, secondary and tertiary); retail and entertainment; open space; and health facilities (medical, hospital, specialist, aged care and retirement) all within a 320 hectare site
- Proposed new rail line to Brisbane and Ipswich
- Upgrades to major road links to Brisbane and Ipswich.
Various precincts of the Springfield community are connected by an open space spine which contains walking and cycling facilities, so it is easier to walk and cycle than drive. The proposed public transport facilities will reduce the demand on the road system for external trips and there is a proposed internal public transport system, including consideration of services such as light rail. Other innovations being considered for Springfield include a free bicycle pool, car share systems, greenways, bicycle lifts (to assist with travel up hills), workplace travel plans and a new resident pack which details their travel options.
The town centre is based on the Orion Shopping Centre where a walkable main street has been introduced. The centre also has short- and long-term bicycle parking.
