Heart Foundation Walking Program

Description: Heart Foundation Walking (previously known as Just Walk It) is a free community-based walking program that aims to increase participation in regular and enjoyable physical activity. With funding from Department of Communities Queensland and the Australian Government, Department of Health and Ageing, this initiative is implemented by the Heart Foundation in Queensland in collaboration with local governments and community health services. Heart Foundation Walking provides a cost-effective model for establishing regular walking groups within a local community. It is an accessible, convenient, safe and free physical activity program. Walking groups are led by volunteers. Walk Organisers offer a local, enjoyable, social and supportive physical activity option for people who wish to walk in their local area or with colleagues either before work or at lunchtime.

Achievements:

  • Australia’s largest group walking program with over 4,500 participants in 77 regions across Queensland
  • over the last 10 years, more than 15,000 Australians have become more physically active through local walking groups
  • comprehensive evaluations of Just Walk It  have demonstrated that it reaches those least likely to participate in physical activity, increases or maintains their physical activity levels and has a retention rate of nearly 80 per cent at six months, and the number of walkers is growing by about 80 per month

As well as outdoor neighbourhood walking groups, there are specialty walks including parents with prams, shopping centre groups and schoolgroups.
