Ceres Centre: Promoting community food systems

CERES (pronounced ‘series’) is located on 4.5 hectares (10 acres) in East Brunswick, Melbourne and is the most visited community environmental centre in Australia. CERES runs a café, nursery, organic farm and market as well as festivals, education programs and a community kitchen.

The farm provides locally grown organic food, education in community food systems, a market place and employment for farmers, teachers and market workers and is an example of how an urban city farm can contribute to the local community.

There are about 50 community garden plots on site which are rented out yearly to those with limited household space for growing. Working bees and social BBQs are great opportunities for gardeners to mingle, share freshly grown produce, swap seeds and pitch in to help maintain the site.
