Breastfeeding Promotion Gympie, a community action group initiated by the local Community Nutritionist, has a focus on engaging the local council to increase the number of parenting facilities and breastfeeding-friendly venues.
In the four years they have been established, Breastfeeding Promotion Gympie has had a number of successes.
- Increased awareness and understanding of councillors and department managers of the need for supportive environments for breastfeeding.
- The group obtained status as a third party referral agency for development applications.
- There are over 120 venues where breastfeeding is welcome in Gympie, Kilkivan, Goomeri, Cooloola Coast and the Mary Valley, including every library and general practice, and many restaurants, shops and offices.
- Assisted Gympie Regional Council to secure ABA Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace Accreditation.
Breastfeeding Promotion Gympie continues to build on these successes and work towards its aim of ‘protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding locally and increasing community awareness and acceptance of breastfeeding’ in Gympie, the Mary Valley and Cooloola Coast.
Members include: community members; Australian Breastfeeding Association – Gympie Group; Coordinator of the Child and Family Hub at Cooloola Family and Community Development; and Child and Family Health, Maternity and Women’s Health Unit and Community Nutritionist at Gympie Health Service.
